On Tuesday March 12, the carbon4 finance team was delighted to showcase its latest publication "The oil sector: towards the last drop?"&nbsp;The oil and gas industry, vital for our economy for over a century, fuels various sectors reliant on hydrocarbons. However, with rising emissions exacerbating the climate crisis, drastic reduction in hydrocarbon production by 2050 is imperative.&nbsp;Despite this urgency, companies remain largely unambitious in emission reduction targets, while the sector’s profitability and reliance on short-term gains hinder transition efforts.&nbsp;It is essential that a large proportion of the reserves remain in the ground and in this context, financial players have a key role to play – that of directing financing towards companies which have begun their energy transition.&nbsp;This is the aim of the CIA methodology, which distinguishes between companies that are ambitious in their strategy, and those that are less so.&nbsp;During the webinar, Adriaan and Melissa presented the methodology as well as the results of the research paper published in January 2024.<a href="https://youtu.be/pkkUY9wfi8U">Watch our replay on YouTube</a><a href="https://carbon4finance.com/files/O_and_G_Webinar_Slides.pdf">Download our presentation</a><a href="https://www.carbon4finance.com/webinar-oil-sector ">Read our publication</a>

Melissa joined Carbon4 Finance in 2021 as Head of Sales and Business Development. She has a solid background in the financial industry, having worked for renowned banks such as Bank of France, Credit Mutuel Arkea, Société Générale, Morgan Stanley, and BNP Paribas. In her last role in BNPP, she was in charge of developing the sustainability loan offer in the Emerging Markets.&nbsp;Aside from her professional life, Melissa is a board member of The Shifters, an association gathering more than 12 000 volunteers in Europe which support the Shift Project, a think tank whose mission is to decarbonize the economy. As Head of the Project Department, she creates and coordinates an infrastructure to support hundreds of projects from the volunteers.&nbsp;Additionally, Melissa is a board member of Orano’s Stakeholder Panel, where she provides corporate management with insights on the social, societal, and environmental responsibility of the Group. &nbsp;

Charles' joined Carbon4 Finance in September 2020 as a Carbon Data Analyst. He is part of the Data team, where he participates in databases' development related to CIA and CRIS methodologies. He also participates in CIA campaigns, with a specialization on firms belonging to the ICT sector.&nbsp;Charles graduated from Centrale Nantes and University College London, where he specialized in solving energy-related problems through data analysis. Prior to joining the team, he built his early-on experience through internships in energy departments of two major French companies.&nbsp;

ICT: a sector disconnected from the climate reality?

During this session, Carbon4 Finance presented the Carbon Impact Analytics methodology, and the sectorial analyst expert Grégoire Deumier discussed the specificity of the chemical sector and results of the chemical campaign gathered in a research paper, assessed thanks to the bottom-up approach. Indeed, the sector represents 10% of the world’s final energy consumption. Virginie Wauquiez joined Carbon4 Finance in July 2022 as Chief Executive Officer. She brings 26 years of wide and strong expertise in the finance industry, gained through executive roles in capital markets, structured and asset finance, strategy and risk within the HSBC Group. From 2011 to 2020, she served as Risk Chief Operating Officer and Head of Risk Strategy at HSBC, with a specific focus on risk management, risk transformation, regulatory engagement and sustainable finance.She also developed entrepreneurial projects linked to corporate social responsibility and strategic advisory.
