Decarbonizing the real estate sector industry: a project still in construction
From its construction to its usage, a building is a major emitter of GHG emissions. Taking the whole value chain, the IEA estimates that buildings are responsible for up to 40% of the world’s GHG Emissions. To tackle climate change, most of the building stock and almost all of the newly built buildings will have to drastically cut back their energy consumption as well as limit upstream emissions.
An important part of the responsibility lies in the hands of private companies, which are either constructors, investors, or owners. This study analyses 169 companies of the sector using the Carbon Impact Analytics (CIA) methodology, assessing their current performance, transition strategies, and alignment with climate scenarios.
While most of them acknowledge climate transition risks, only a few implement coherent strategies to limit their emissions.
