The carbon intensity of building usage around the world: usage and regional gaps.
Direct and indirect emissions related to the use of buildings account for around 24% of the world’s GHG emissions[1]. But does a hospital in Taiwan emit as much as a 2-bedroom flat in Paris? Obviously not. But why?
By considering multiple national and worldwide databases, Carbon4 Finance has calculated the carbon intensity of various buildings in various location. This article illustrates how fluctuating could be the carbon intensity of buildings depending on their region and their usage.
On one hand, it is obvious that usage makes a big difference in the building’s GHG emissions. A hospital needs much more electricity to power the operating rooms and make the scanners work than any residential building. On the other hand, electricity consumption is more of less emissive depending on location: in some regions, electricity power is massively produced by renewable assets, while some countries still heavily rely on coal.
